Is the 2019 Toyota RAV4 a good car?

Generally — with a 4.48/5 user rating and an 8/10 expert rating, the 2019 Toyota RAV4 lands as a strong all-rounder for compact-SUV shoppers. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel and Safety.

Owners consistently praise its great value, smooth ride, spacious interior, and modern features. The same feedback also points to its safety features and adaptability for outdoor use, which fits a vehicle meant to handle commuting, family duty, and road trips.

The trade-offs are clear: the engine can feel underwhelming, and some owners feel cheapened parts hurt the overall impression. That lines up with the overview’s focus on usefulness and style over driving excitement.

With a broad appeal as a daily driver, family hauler, and occasional adventure vehicle, it makes sense if you want versatility more than thrills. The market also shows 28.3% of listings as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.

The owner feedback also points to the RAV4 as a vehicle people trust for reliability, dependability, and long-term use. That matches the expert view that Toyota is trying to deliver a small SUV you can count on for daily commuting, family errands, and road trips.

The expert assessment also frames it as a practical, efficient, and reliable choice in a segment where those traits matter most. Toyota’s standard safety and utility focus further support the sense that this is built for steady ownership rather than short-term novelty.

For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about outright durability and more about whether the driving experience and cabin quality meet your expectations over time.

What should I look for when buying a used 2019 Toyota RAV4?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The LE starts with steel 17-inch wheels with plastic covers, heated front seats, LED headlights, automatic high beams, and privacy-tinted windows, while the XLE adds alloy wheels, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift lever, fog lights, a power moonroof, push-button start, a power liftgate, and dual-zone climate control. The Trail adds a more rugged look and equipment, and the Limited moves further upscale with chrome-finished wheels, passive entry, heated rear seats, and navigation.
• Powertrain: Every trim uses a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine with 203 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic. FWD is available on the lower trims, AWD is available on the lower trims, and torque-vectoring AWD is standard on the Trail and Limited.
• Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard and includes forward-collision warning and emergency braking, lane-departure warning, automatic high-beams, adaptive cruise control, and Lane-Tracing Assist. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are also standard.
• Infotainment: The LE has a 7-inch touchscreen with Entune 3.0, Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth, and a USB port. The Trail gets an upgraded 7-inch instrument panel display and an 8-inch infotainment screen, while the XLE adds more USB ports.
• Fuel efficiency: The FWD model is rated at 8.8 L/100 km city, 6.7 highway, and 7.8 combined. The AWD model is rated at 9.2 L/100 km city and 7.1 highway, and the observed combined figure was 8.0 L/100 km.

Which 2019 Toyota RAV4 trim should I buy?

The 2019 Toyota RAV4 is offered in 4 trim levels: LE, XLE, Trail, and Limited.

Here's the short version:

• LE: This is the value starting point if you want the essentials, including standard safety tech, heated front seats, and Apple CarPlay without stretching the budget.
• XLE: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the most useful comfort and convenience upgrades, including a power moonroof, power liftgate, dual-zone climate control, and a more polished cabin.
• Trail: Choose this if you want the more rugged character, standard torque-vectoring AWD, and the off-road-oriented equipment that gives the RAV4 some extra capability.
• Limited: Pick this if you want the most upscale version, with chrome details, heated rear seats, navigation, and the most premium feel in the lineup.

Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard across the lineup, so you do not need to move up a trim just to get the core safety package.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2019 Toyota RAV4?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so it makes sense to compare listings carefully and move quickly on strong examples.

• Deal availability: 28.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 488 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.57% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $26,561 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2019 Toyota RAV4's resale value?

The current average of $26,695 CAD sits slightly below last year's $28,882 CAD.

That softer pricing can help you as a buyer now, but it also suggests a future seller may need to be realistic on asking price. If the market has already moved down, resale gains are less likely to come from price appreciation and more likely to come from keeping the vehicle in strong condition.

The RAV4’s broad appeal should still support demand, especially because it blends safety, practicality, and everyday usefulness. A well-kept example with the right trim and equipment should remain easier to move than a less versatile SUV.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.48/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2019 Toyota RAV4 safe?

The 2019 Toyota RAV4 earns 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety equipment includes a full array of front- and side-impact airbags, a backup camera, traction control, a tire-pressure monitoring system, and Toyota Safety Sense 2.0. That suite brings forward-collision warning and emergency braking, lane-departure warning, automatic high-beams, adaptive cruise control, and Lane-Tracing Assist. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are also standard.

That broad standard safety content is one of the RAV4’s strongest selling points, especially if you want advanced driver assistance without paying for a higher trim. It also reinforces the model’s family-friendly positioning.

Should I buy a 2019 Toyota RAV4 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2019 if:

• 28.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.57% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.48/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• It adds bold styling, new tech, and a bit of off-road ability.

Consider the 2020 if:

• At $28,168 CAD, the 2020 costs more than the current year's $26,695 CAD average.
• It broadens the lineup with more configurations, including sporty XSE and luxurious Limited.

The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2019 is the smarter buy. If you are willing to pay more for a wider range of configurations and a newer model year, the 2020 is worth a look. Price-sensitive buyers should focus on the 2019, especially if they find one near the low end of the range.
