CarGurus Analysis: 2019 Hyundai Kona
Summary
With 40 currently listed for sale and an average price of $15,992 CAD, 10.0% of 2019 Hyundai Kona listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2019 Hyundai Kona 4.54 / 5 stars.
Why it stands out
The 2019 Hyundai Kona stands out as a subcompact SUV that mixes distinctive styling with a strong equipment list and a choice of powertrains. In its first generation, the Kona offered a naturally aspirated 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine with 147 horsepower and 132 lb-ft of torque, while higher trims could be had with a 1.6-litre turbocharged engine producing 175 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque. That turbocharged version was paired with a seven-speed dual clutch automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive, giving the Kona a more energetic character than many small crossovers in its class.
It was also well equipped for the money. Standard features included 16-inch alloy wheels, a 3.5-inch instrument-cluster screen, air conditioning, heated front seats, keyless entry, a rearview camera, Bluetooth connectivity with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a seven-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The 2019 model year also brought the launch of the Kona Electric, which offered strong acceleration and could travel up to 415 kilometres on a single charge. That combination of variety and technology helped make the Kona appealing to buyers who wanted something practical without feeling plain.
There are a few trade-offs, though. The first-generation Kona was cramped inside and short on cargo space, and some drivers also note the lack of a spare tire and adaptive cruise control. Even so, the 2019 Hyundai Kona remains distinctive because it delivers style, available all-wheel drive, useful technology, and a broad spread of powertrain choices in a small footprint.

Great size, features and appearance. All I could want in a compact SUV at a great price. First time with an SUV so time will tell if it checks all the boxes.

Its day 1 but I know I will be in love with this vehicle for a long time. Its got super easy to understand features and such a sleak look and feel. I feel great driving it around. I will say it can feel a little cramped in the back for the taller individual, especially if there are people sat in front of them. However, comfort and style for me are a 10/10 all around

How much does the 2019 Hyundai Kona cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $15,621 CAD |
| Year-Round Low | $15,611 CAD |
| Year-Round High | $18,397 CAD |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $18,332 CAD |
| Change vs. Last Year | −14.79% |
Prices have softened 14.79% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.
There are 285 listings available, which gives you a solid amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2019 Hyundai Kona a good car?
Yes — the 2019 Hyundai Kona earns a 4.5/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Drivers consistently praise its comfortable ride, solid performance, and useful technology, and many also like its safety features and good fuel economy. For you, that makes it a sensible pick if you want a subcompact SUV with personality, everyday practicality, and a well-equipped feel. With 31.6% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still meaningful market opportunity if you shop carefully.
Is the 2019 Hyundai Kona reliable?
Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience for many drivers, with praise centred on the Kona’s solid day-to-day usability and confidence-inspiring feel. That said, used buyers should still watch for signs of wear on any example, especially if it has seen heavy urban use or limited maintenance history.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2019 Hyundai Kona?
The market looks moderate and selective buyers should have some leverage if they shop patiently.
- Deal availability: 31.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 285 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 14.79% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $15,611 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2019 Hyundai Kona's resale value?
The current average of $15,621 CAD sits slightly below last year's $18,332 CAD.
That price movement suggests the Kona has become more affordable for buyers, but it also means future sellers may face a softer resale environment than they would have a year ago. If you buy now, the lower entry price can help offset some depreciation risk. Strong demand for well-reviewed used examples should still support values better than a model with weaker owner feedback.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2019 Hyundai Kona or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2019 if:
- 31.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 14.79% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $17,453 CAD, the 2020 costs more than the current year's $15,621 CAD average.
- It adds more standard driver assists and a fresher trim lineup.
The bottom line:
Choose the 2019 if you want the better value and a wider pool of affordable listings. If you are willing to pay more for a newer model with added standard driver assists, the 2020 is the better secondary path.
