What should I look for when buying a used 2019 Hyundai Elantra?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The sedan is sold as Essential, Preferred, Luxury, Sport, and Ultimate trims. The base Essential is the most stripped-down version, while higher trims add more convenience and safety equipment. If you want the best value, the Preferred is the trim to focus on because it adds key driver-assistance features without jumping all the way to the top of the range.
• Powertrain: You get a 2.0-litre four-cylinder with 147 horsepower and front-wheel drive. The six-speed automatic is standard on higher trims, while the manual is standard on Essential and Preferred. Fuel use is rated at 7.4 L/100 km in combined driving with the automatic, or 8.0 L/100 km with the manual.
• Safety package: Forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking and lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist start on Preferred. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and a driver-monitoring system can be added through the Sun and Safety Package, and those features are standard on higher trims. Adaptive cruise control, pedestrian-detection enhancement, and Safe Exit Assist are reserved for Ultimate.
• Infotainment: Non-base trims get a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Ultimate upgrades you to an 8-inch display, navigation, and an Infinity premium audio system. Hyundai Bluelink is included on Limited and Ultimate with a five-year trial subscription.
• Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada rates the Elantra at 7.4 L/100 km in combined driving with the automatic, or 8.0 L/100 km with the manual.

Which 2019 Hyundai Elantra trim should I buy?

The 2019 Hyundai Elantra is offered in 5 trim levels: Essential, Preferred, Luxury, Sport, and Ultimate.

Here's the short version:

• Essential: This is the entry point, but it’s the most basic version and misses some of the convenience and safety upgrades you’ll want in a used compact sedan.
• Preferred: This is the best-value choice for most shoppers because it adds the key driver-assistance features that make the Elantra feel much better equipped.
• Luxury: This trim adds more comfort and convenience, including satellite radio, and it’s a good fit if you want a more polished daily driver.
• Sport: Choose this only if you specifically want the turbocharged character; it’s the performance-oriented outlier in the lineup.
• Ultimate: This is the most fully equipped version, with the biggest infotainment upgrade and the most advanced safety and convenience features.

The safety-package features are not fully standard until you move up from the base trim, so check carefully for the Sun and Safety Package on lower trims.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2019 Hyundai Elantra?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.

• Deal availability: 29.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 466 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 19.75% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $12,229 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2019 Hyundai Elantra's resale value?

The current average of $12,242 CAD sits slightly below last year's $15,255 CAD.

That softer pricing means future sellers may face a more competitive market if supply stays healthy. If you buy at today’s average, you’re starting from a lower cost basis than owners did a year ago, which can help limit depreciation pressure in the near term. Strong value positioning can support demand, but resale will still depend on trim, condition, and equipment.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2019 Hyundai Elantra safe?

The 2019 Hyundai Elantra gets top marks across the board from IIHS, except for an Acceptable rating for the accessibility of its LATCH child-seat anchors. The government gives the car a four-star overall rating from NHTSA, thanks to four-star frontal-impact results combined with a four-star side-impact protection rating for rear-seat occupants.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

The Elantra includes forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking and lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist starting on Preferred. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and a driver-monitoring system are available through the Sun and Safety Package, and those features are standard on higher trims. Ultimate adds adaptive cruise control, pedestrian-detection enhancement, and Safe Exit Assist.

Should I buy a 2019 Hyundai Elantra or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2019 if:

• 29.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 19.75% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2019 stands out for its value-focused update and strong technology and cost-effectiveness scores.

Consider the 2020 if:

• At $14,538 CAD, the 2020 costs more than the current year's $12,242 CAD average.
• It adds improved fuel efficiency and newly packaged safety features.

The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2019 is the smarter buy. If you’re willing to pay more for a newer outgoing model with added efficiency and safety packaging, the 2020 is worth a look.

How does the 2019 Hyundai Elantra compare to the 2019 Honda Civic?

Our experts score the 2019 Hyundai Elantra 8.2/10 and the 2019 Honda Civic 7.8/10. The Elantra is the stronger value play, with a much lower average used price and a higher share of good and great deals.
