What should I look for when buying a used 2019 Hyundai Elantra?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The sedan is sold as Essential, Preferred, Luxury, Sport, and Ultimate. The base Essential misses some of the more desirable convenience and safety equipment, while higher trims add more of the features that make the car feel better equipped.
• Powertrain: Most versions use a 2.0-litre four-cylinder with 147 horsepower and 132 lb-ft of torque, paired with front-wheel drive. The automatic transmission is standard on higher trims, while the manual is standard on Essential and Preferred.
• Safety package: Forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking and lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist start on Preferred. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and a driver-monitoring system can be added through the Sun and Safety Package, and those features are standard on higher trims. Ultimate adds adaptive cruise control, pedestrian-detection enhancement, and Safe Exit Assist.
• Infotainment: The base Essential gets Bluetooth and a rear-view camera, while other trims add a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Ultimate upgrades to an 8-inch display, navigation, and an Infinity premium sound system.
• Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada says the automatic version uses 7.4 L/100 km in combined driving, while the manual is rated at 8.0 L/100 km.

Which 2019 Hyundai Elantra trim should I buy?

The 2019 Hyundai Elantra is offered in 5 trim levels: Essential, Preferred, Luxury, Sport, and Ultimate.

Here's the short version:

• Essential: This is the entry point, but it is the most stripped-down version. You get the basics, yet you give up the 7-inch touchscreen and several of the safety and convenience upgrades that make the Elantra feel more complete.
• Preferred: This is the best-value choice for most shoppers because it adds the key infotainment and safety upgrades without pushing you into the pricier upper trims. It is the trim that makes the Elantra feel properly equipped.
• Luxury: This trim adds more comfort and convenience, including satellite radio and access to more connected features. It suits you if you want a more polished daily driver.
• Sport: This is the trim to consider if you want the more rewarding driving character highlighted in the overview. It is the one most likely to satisfy you if you care more about the driving experience.
• Ultimate: This is the most feature-rich version, with the 8-inch screen, navigation, premium audio, adaptive cruise control, pedestrian detection, and Safe Exit Assist. It is the right pick if you want the most complete Elantra.

The Sun and Safety Package adds important safety equipment on lower trims, while those features are standard on higher trims.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2019 Hyundai Elantra?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you are patient.

• Deal availability: 28.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 460 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 20.11% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $12,356 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2019 Hyundai Elantra's resale value?

The current average of $12,356 CAD sits slightly below last year's $15,465 CAD.

That softer pricing can help you as a buyer today, but it also means a future seller may face a more competitive market if prices stay under pressure. The year-round range suggests there is still room for variation depending on trim, condition, and equipment. Well-equipped examples should hold more appeal than bare-bones versions because shoppers in this segment tend to value features and comfort.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2019 Hyundai Elantra safe?

The 2019 Hyundai Elantra gets top marks across the board from IIHS, except for an Acceptable rating for the accessibility of its LATCH child-seat anchors, and it earns a four-star overall rating from NHTSA, thanks to four-star frontal-impact results combined with a four-star side-impact protection rating for rear-seat occupants.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Most versions include forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking and lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and a driver-monitoring system are available through the Sun and Safety Package, and those features are standard on higher trims. Ultimate adds adaptive cruise control, pedestrian-detection enhancement, and Safe Exit Assist.

Should I buy a 2019 Hyundai Elantra or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2019 if:

• 28.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 20.11% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2019 stands out for its strong value, updated features, and the turbocharged Sport trim as the most rewarding drive.

Consider the 2020 if:

• At $14,703 CAD, the 2020 costs more than the current year's $12,356 CAD average.
• It adds improved fuel efficiency and newly packaged safety features.

The bottom line: If you want the better bargain, the 2019 is the smarter starting point because pricing has softened and inventory is available. If you are willing to pay more for a later model with added safety packaging and efficiency updates, the 2020 is the better alternative.
