What should I look for when buying a used 2019 Honda CR-V?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base LX has standard 17-inch aluminium wheels, body-colour trim, and rear privacy glass, while higher trims add bigger 18-inch wheels and more equipment. Some owners also note that certain trims can feel short on features such as a sunroof or navigation.
• Powertrain: In Canada, every trim uses the turbocharged 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine with a CVT, and it is offered with FWD or AWD. The engine is described as more responsive and better on fuel than the larger alternative.
• Safety package: Honda Sensing is standard on all trims except the base LX FWD trim. It includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and road-departure mitigation. Automatic high beams are separate, and Touring adds blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert.
• Infotainment: You get a 7-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, a rearview camera, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, text messaging capability, and HondaLink connected services. Touring adds navigation and a premium audio system.
• Fuel efficiency: The expert test drive notes 10.2 L/100 km in testing, versus an expectation of 8.0 L/100 km in combined driving.

Which 2019 Honda CR-V trim should I buy?

The 2019 Honda CR-V is offered in 4 trim levels: LX, EX, EX-L, Touring.

Here's the short version:

• LX: This is the entry point, and it gives you the core CR-V experience with standard 17-inch wheels, body-colour trim, rear privacy glass, and FWD with optional AWD. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the model, but it is also the trim where Honda Sensing is not standard on the FWD version.
• EX: This is the best-value choice for many shoppers because it adds more equipment while keeping the CR-V’s practical strengths intact. It is a smart middle ground if you want a better-equipped daily driver without stretching to the top trims.
• EX-L: This trim is for you if you want a more upscale feel and more convenience features. It builds on the lower trims with additional comfort and tech content, making it a stronger fit if you plan to keep the SUV for a while and want a richer ownership experience.
• Touring: This is the most fully equipped version, with navigation, a premium audio system, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. It suits you best if you want the most complete CR-V package and are willing to pay for it.

Honda Sensing is standard on all trims except the base LX FWD trim, so that is the main safety-package gap to watch.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2019 Honda CR-V?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can be choosy if you shop carefully.

• Deal availability: 29.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 742 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 14.27% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $22,260 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2019 Honda CR-V's resale value?

The current average of $22,365 CAD sits slightly below last year's $26,089 CAD.

That price drop suggests the market has become more favourable for buyers, but it also means future sellers may need to price more competitively to stand out. If you buy well now, you may have less downside risk than someone who purchased when prices were higher. The CR-V’s broad appeal and strong reputation should still help support demand when it is time to sell.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2019 Honda CR-V safe?

The 2019 Honda CR-V is a Top Safety Pick according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), and it earns a five-star safety rating from NHTSA.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Honda Sensing is the standard driver-assistance suite on all trims except the base LX FWD trim. It includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and road-departure mitigation. Automatic high beams are not part of the suite, but they are equipped separately. Touring also adds blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert.

The main caveat is the IIHS headlight result: an Acceptable rating keeps it from earning Top Safety Pick Plus. The lane-keeping system is also described as less refined than some rivals.

Should I buy a 2019 Honda CR-V or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2019 if:

• 29.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 14.27% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• It combines a roomy cabin, strong safety, and a historically reliable reputation.

Consider the 2020 if:

• At $25,240 CAD, the 2020 costs more than the current year's $22,365 CAD average.
• It adds engine and safety upgrades that improve fuel efficiency.

The bottom line: The 2019 is the better value if you want a well-rounded CR-V at a lower price, especially with strong inventory and softened pricing. If you can stretch for the 2020, you may prefer the added upgrades, but price-sensitive buyers should feel comfortable focusing on the 2019.

How does the 2019 Honda CR-V compare to the 2019 Toyota RAV4?

Our experts score the 2019 Honda CR-V 8/10 and the 2019 Toyota RAV4 8/10. The CR-V is the more affordable used buy here, while the RAV4 asks more but brings stronger horsepower and better highway fuel economy. The CR-V also has more listings available and a slightly better good-and-great deal share, which can make it easier to shop. If you want the lower entry price and broader used inventory, the CR-V has the edge; if you want more power and can pay more, the RAV4 is worth a look.
