Why it stands out

The 2018 Volkswagen Golf sits in the second-generation Golf R era, and that matters because this version blends serious performance with the everyday usability that has long defined the Golf name. It uses a 2.0-litre TSI turbo engine with 296 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque, plus 4Motion all-wheel drive for added grip. By this point, the Golf R had also grown into a more complete package, with a five-door body style only, a more purposeful stance, and a long list of standard equipment that included a touchscreen infotainment system, heated and electrically adjustable front seats, leather upholstery, Bluetooth connectivity, keyless entry, dual-zone climate control, bi-xenon headlights, and a rear-view camera.

What makes the 2018 Volkswagen Golf especially appealing is how much performance hardware and equipment it packs without losing the Golf’s restrained character. It comes with a six-speed manual transmission from the 2016 model year onwards, while the available seven-speed DSG adds another choice for buyers who prefer an automatic. Volkswagen’s XDS electronic differential lock is standard, as is Driving Mode Selection, and an optional DCC adaptive damping system lets the suspension be tuned for comfort or sportiness. By 2018, the model had also gained an eight-inch touchscreen and LED headlights as standard, along with a full suite of driver assistance features including forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian monitoring, blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and adaptive cruise control.

There are a few trade-offs to keep in mind. Fuel economy is listed at between 9.2 and 9.9 litres per 100 kilometres combined, so this is not a frugal hatchback. The second-generation Golf R also has a fairly solid reputation for reliability, but coolant leaks and water pump failures are not unknown, and a rattling noise from under the hood could point to a stretched timing chain. Even so, the 2018 Volkswagen Golf stands out as a fast, well-equipped, and comparatively subtle performance car that delivers a lot of capability in a compact package.
