CarGurus Analysis: 2018 GMC Canyon
Summary
With 69 currently listed for sale and an average price of $24,888 CAD, 30.4% of 2018 GMC Canyon listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2018 GMC Canyon 4.25 / 5 stars.
Why it stands out
The 2018 GMC Canyon stands out as a midsize pickup that leans more upscale than many of its rivals. By this point in the second generation, GMC had already given the Canyon a more luxurious identity, and the lineup included the Denali trim with features such as 20-inch chrome wheels, a spray-in bedliner, ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, the Driver Alert package, a Bose premium audio system, and a wireless charging pad. That premium bent is one of the Canyon’s defining traits, especially for buyers who want a truck that feels a little more refined without moving up to a full-size model.
The 2018 model year also benefited from useful equipment and a broad range of configurations. The infotainment screen was increased to seven inches, and the rearview camera gained trailering assist guidelines. Buyers could choose from a crew cab or extended cab body style, and the available engines included a 2.5-litre four-cylinder, a 3.6-litre V6, and a 2.8-litre Duramax turbo-diesel for crew cab SLE and SLT trims. The diesel was especially notable for its 369 lb-ft of torque and increased towing capacity of 3,490 kilograms, while the V6 was rated at 308 hp and 275 lb-ft of torque for this model year.
There are trade-offs, though. The Canyon’s fuel economy was not class-leading, and the more off-road-focused versions gave up some on-road agility. Safety ratings were mixed as well, with the NHTSA giving the Canyon four stars overall and in frontal protection, five stars for side impacts, and three stars in rollover tests. Even so, for shoppers who value a comfortable cabin, strong available power, and a more premium feel than most midsize pickups offer, the 2018 GMC Canyon has a clear appeal.

While not having a lot to compare it to, it appears so far to be a strong running engine (2.8 Duramax) . The seating seams hard in contrast to my last truck (2500 HD ) , both being Denali versions with leather seats . The fuel mileage is outstanding averaging low to mid 30s . The electronics package is full of creature comforts including heated and cooled seats . Overall a nice ride.

How much does the 2018 GMC Canyon cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $24,795 CAD |
| Year-Round Low | $24,795 CAD |
| Year-Round High | $28,907 CAD |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $28,728 CAD |
| Change vs. Last Year | −13.69% |
Prices have softened 13.69% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.
There are 70 listings available, which gives you a reasonable amount of choice in the used market.
Is the 2018 GMC Canyon a good car?
Generally — the 2018 GMC Canyon earns a 4.25/5 user rating, which points to solid owner satisfaction. Drivers commonly praise its strong running engine, comfort, and good looks, and many also like the extended bed option. If you want a midsize pickup that feels more upscale than many rivals and still offers a comfortable cabin, this model year fits that brief well. With 30.0% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2018 GMC Canyon reliable?
Owners rate it 4.25/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback highlights a dependable-feeling engine and a truck that many owners are happy to live with over time. That said, some drivers mention transmission issues, so you should pay close attention to service records and how the truck drives on a test route. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is making sure any past drivetrain concerns have been properly addressed.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 GMC Canyon?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can afford to compare listings carefully before committing.
- Deal availability: 30.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 70 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 13.69% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $24,795 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2018 GMC Canyon's resale value?
The current average of $24,795 CAD sits slightly below last year's $28,728 CAD.
That softer pricing suggests the market has moved in buyers’ favour, which can make resale a little more competitive for future sellers. If you own one now, you may need to price it carefully to stand out against similarly equipped trucks. On the other hand, the Canyon’s upscale positioning and broad appeal can still help support demand when it’s time to sell.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.25/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2018 GMC Canyon or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2018 if:
- 30.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 13.69% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.25/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: If you want a midsize pickup with a more premium feel, the 2018 Canyon is the stronger choice when you find one priced near the current average and backed by good maintenance history. If you’re more price-sensitive, a nearby model year may be worth comparing, but the 2018 stands out as the better pick when comfort, style, and value all matter.
