CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Volvo XC90
Summary
With 18 currently listed for sale and an average price of $13,990 CAD, 27.8% of 2017 Volvo XC90 listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Volvo XC90 4.8 / 5 stars.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Volvo XC90 stands out as a luxury midsize SUV that blends Scandinavian design, family practicality, and a strong safety reputation. It was part of the second generation, which brought a complete overhaul with sleek, minimalist styling and advanced technologies aimed at informing and entertaining occupants while keeping them safe. Inside, it feels especially upscale thanks to a vertical touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality, top-quality materials, and superb accessibility. It also offers useful space for passengers in the second row and even the third row, which Volvo says can comfortably accommodate people up to 5’7” tall.
What makes the 2017 model especially appealing is the breadth of its powertrain and safety offerings. The available T5 uses a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine with 250 horsepower, while the T6 is twincharged and produces 316 horsepower. A plug-in hybrid T8 is also available, pairing the T6 unit with an electric motor for up to 400 horsepower and impressive fuel economy. Standard all-wheel drive adds confidence, and the safety suite includes City Safety, Pilot Assist for semi-autonomous driving, and a 360-degree camera system. Owners also praise the XC90 for its safety features, spacious interior, upscale materials, and strong build quality.
There are a few trade-offs to keep in mind. Base models are underpowered, and the XC90 can bring higher maintenance costs typical of European luxury vehicles. Reliability is generally good, but buyers should watch for premature battery wear in plug-in hybrid models and minor infotainment glitches. Even so, the 2017 Volvo XC90 remains distinctive for buyers who want a refined, safety-focused SUV with real family usefulness and a premium feel.

How much does the 2017 Volvo XC90 cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $19,452 CAD |
| Year-Round Low | $19,452 CAD |
| Year-Round High | $26,123 CAD |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $25,179 CAD |
| Change vs. Last Year | −22.75% |
Prices have softened 22.75% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.
There are 92 listings available, which gives you a reasonable amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2017 Volvo XC90 a good car?
Yes — the 2017 Volvo XC90 earns a 4.8/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners consistently praise its safety features, spacious interior, and upscale materials, and many also highlight its strong build quality. If you want a luxury midsize SUV that works well as a family vehicle and still feels premium inside, this model year fits that brief well. With 34.8% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Volvo XC90 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.8/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a vehicle that feels dependable and well built, with many reviews emphasising its strong build quality and trouble-free ownership experience. That said, used buyers should still budget for the realities of long-term ownership on a European luxury SUV, especially if maintenance history is incomplete or the vehicle has higher mileage.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Volvo XC90?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can afford to be choosy if you’re comparing listings.
- Deal availability: 34.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 92 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 22.75% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $19,452 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Volvo XC90's resale value?
The current average of $19,452 CAD sits slightly below last year's $25,179 CAD.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favourable entry point today. For a future seller, it also means resale value may be more sensitive to condition, mileage, and service records than it would be in a stronger pricing environment. Well-kept examples should still attract interest, especially if they present as clean, well maintained family SUVs.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Volvo XC90 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 34.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 22.75% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line:
If you want a luxury midsize SUV with strong owner approval, a premium-feeling cabin, and family-friendly practicality, the 2017 XC90 is the primary year to target. If your priority is stretching your budget further, you can also compare nearby years for the right combination of price and condition, but the 2017 stands out as a solid choice when you find a well-priced example with good history.
