CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Subaru Impreza

Summary
With 117 currently listed for sale and an average price of $14,060 CAD, 35.0% of 2017 Subaru Impreza listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Subaru Impreza 4.33 / 5 stars.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Subaru Impreza stands out as a turning point for the model. It brought the Subaru Global Platform with increased chassis rigidity and a lower centre of gravity, along with better handling and ride quality. It also added Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard across all trims, while keeping Subaru’s Symmetrical All-Wheel-Drive standard. For buyers who want a compact car that feels secure in poor weather and still offers everyday comfort, that combination is a major part of its appeal.
This generation also kept the Impreza practical and easy to live with. The 2.0-litre boxer engine delivered 152 horsepower, and the continuously variable transmission became more prominent, with a five-speed manual still available on the lower trims. Standard equipment included a 6.5-inch infotainment touchscreen, cruise control, and incline-start assist, while available features included heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, steering responsive headlights, EyeSight driver-assistance technology, and a moonroof. The trade-offs are worth noting: the performance emphasis was gone, some interior materials feel cheap, and there is not much cargo space. Still, for shoppers prioritising standard all-wheel drive, useful technology, and a comfortable drive, the 2017 Subaru Impreza remains a distinctive choice.

My wife and I were both civic owners for 13+ years each. She got a Crosstrek a few years back, which has been really good to us so far. So when my civic started overstaying its welcome I decided to include subaru in my search. Also test drove a honda civic and toyota corolla. While the Subaru doest exactly have the most potent acceleration- slowest of this group - it is the most fun to drive, in my opinion. The sport trim has a differently-tuned suspension and a tighter steering ratio. Combine these features with the all wheel drive and what you get is a car that you just want to drive. Subaru also got their act together with the interior. The visibility on the subaru is great (corolla is good too). However, the civics rear visibility was lacking because of the cars aggressively sloped rear end. Plus, the subaru just feels way more solidly built than the corolla or civic.

Its hard to see the oil pressure and the engine status of the car. This may be obvious to the car computer. But this is a user experience.

How much does the 2017 Subaru Impreza cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $14,043 CAD |
| Year-Round Low | $13,842 CAD |
| Year-Round High | $16,268 CAD |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $16,263 CAD |
| Change vs. Last Year | −13.65% |
Prices have softened 13.65% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.
There are 114 listings available, which suggests a reasonable amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2017 Subaru Impreza a good car?
Generally — the 4.33/5 user rating points to a model that fits well if you want a compact car with standard all-wheel drive, everyday comfort, and useful technology. The 2017 Impreza’s appeal is strongest if you value secure poor-weather traction, a lower centre of gravity, improved ride quality, and standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto across the lineup. It is less compelling if you want a sporty feel or lots of cargo room. With 34.2% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have some room to shop carefully.
Is the 2017 Subaru Impreza reliable?
Owners rate it 4.33/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The 2017 Impreza’s appeal is tied to its practical design, standard all-wheel drive, and a reputation for durability in a compact package. Its straightforward equipment and comfort-focused setup make it a sensible used-car choice if you want something dependable for daily driving and winter conditions. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that some interior materials feel cheap and cargo space is limited, so you should inspect the cabin and make sure the car suits your storage needs.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Subaru Impreza?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently and still find worthwhile options.
- Deal availability: 34.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 114 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 13.65% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $13,842 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Subaru Impreza's resale value?
The current average of $14,043 CAD sits slightly below last year's $16,263 CAD.
That price movement suggests the market has cooled, which can make the car easier to buy now but may also limit upside if you plan to sell soon. If you purchase at the right price, you may have a better chance of preserving value by avoiding overpaying at the start. The model’s practical appeal and standard all-wheel drive should help keep it relevant with used shoppers who want a dependable compact car.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.33/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Subaru Impreza or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 34.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 13.65% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.33/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: The 2017 is the better pick if you want the newer-generation Impreza experience with standard all-wheel drive, improved ride quality, and modern connectivity. If you are especially price-sensitive, a nearby older year may be worth considering, but the 2017 is the stronger all-around choice when you want the more refined package and can find a well-priced example.
