What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Hyundai Elantra?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The entry-level L trim is the value edition and comes exclusively with a six-speed manual transmission, heated front seats, and keyless entry. Higher trims add more comfort and convenience, and the Limited Ultimate brings advanced systems such as autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, leather seats, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, an eight-speaker Infinity sound system, and an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system.
• Powertrain: The Elantra uses a front-wheel-drive layout and a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine with 147 horsepower and 132 pound-feet of torque. The automatic is rated at 8.3 L/100 km city, 6.4 highway, and 7.4 combined, while the manual is rated at 9.1 city, 6.6 highway, and 8.0 combined.
• Safety package: Available safety equipment includes electronic stability control, vehicle stability management, traction control, and a tire pressure monitoring system. Forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, and a backup camera with rear cross-path detection are also available, with the most advanced systems appearing on higher trims.
• Infotainment: Every 2017 Elantra comes with USB/auxiliary audio inputs, Bluetooth, and SiriusXM satellite radio. Moving upmarket gets you navigation with turn-by-turn instructions in the colour display in the gauge cluster, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are available through the touchscreen.
• Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada estimates fuel economy at 8.3 L/100 km city, 6.4 highway, and 7.4 combined with the automatic, or 9.1 city, 6.6 highway, and 8.0 combined with the manual.

Which 2017 Hyundai Elantra trim should I buy?

The 2017 Hyundai Elantra is offered in 9 trim levels: L, LE, GL, GLS, SE, Sport, Limited, Limited SE, and Limited Ultimate.

Here's the short version:

• L: This is the value-focused starting point, and it gives you heated front seats and keyless entry, but it is also the most basic trim and is sold only with the six-speed manual transmission.
• LE: This is the first step up from the base model and is a sensible choice if you want a little more equipment without chasing the highest-priced versions.
• GL: This trim continues the gradual equipment upgrades and is a good middle-ground option if you want more comfort and convenience than the entry trims.
• GLS: This is another incremental step up, aimed at buyers who want a better-equipped Elantra without moving all the way to the premium end of the range.
• SE: This trim adds more features and sits in the middle of the lineup, making it a practical choice if you want a balanced mix of value and equipment.
• Sport: Choose this if you want a more distinctive trim with a sportier positioning than the mainstream versions.
• Limited: This is the trim that stands out as the best-value recommendation, because it brings a strong mix of comfort, technology, and premium-feeling equipment without jumping all the way to the top.
• Limited SE: This is for shoppers who want a more upscale version of the Limited with additional equipment.
• Limited Ultimate: This is the most fully equipped version, adding the advanced driver-assistance features and premium content mentioned above.

The safety package expands as you move up the range, with the most advanced driver-assistance features reserved for higher trims.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Hyundai Elantra?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can be choosy if you shop carefully.

• Deal availability: 26.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 360 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 16.42% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $10,209 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 Hyundai Elantra's resale value?

The current average of $10,241 CAD sits slightly below last year's $12,252 CAD.

That price movement suggests the Elantra has become more affordable for used buyers, which can make it harder for a future seller to command a premium unless the car is especially well kept. If you own one in strong condition, the current market still shows steady demand thanks to its value, comfort, and efficiency appeal. The softer pricing also means buyers have more leverage, so resale value will depend heavily on trim, mileage, and overall condition.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.73/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2017 Hyundai Elantra safe?

The 2017 Hyundai Elantra earns a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and a four-star safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.

Hyundai equips the Elantra with electronic stability control, vehicle stability management, traction control, and a tire pressure monitoring system. Available driver-assistance features include forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, and a backup camera with rear cross-path detection. The main caveat is the NHTSA concern about side impacts potentially causing injury to rear passengers.

Should I buy a 2017 Hyundai Elantra or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 26.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 16.42% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.73/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It stands out as a thorough redesign with strong styling, technology, safety, and value for the money.

The bottom line: If you want the most polished mix of comfort, efficiency, safety, and technology in this generation, the 2017 is the one to focus on. If you are especially price-sensitive, you may still find a compelling deal by shopping carefully, but the 2017 already looks attractive because its market price has softened and inventory is available.
