CarGurus Analysis: 2017 BMW 2 Series
Summary
With 50 currently listed for sale and an average price of $23,790 CAD, 32.0% of 2017 BMW 2 Series listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 BMW 2 Series 5 / 5 stars.
Why it stands out
The 2017 BMW 2 Series stands out as a compact premium sports car that was aimed at drivers who wanted a fun driving experience and compact proportions. It was part of BMW’s entry-level performance side of the range, and its rear-wheel-drive layout helped give it the kind of driving character that set it apart from rivals. For this model year, the 2 Series also gained more powerful engines, new models, and Apple CarPlay for the first time.
That 2017 refresh brought both coupe and convertible versions with rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive, along with the new 230i and M240i models. The 2.0-litre inline-four produced 248 hp, while the 3.0-litre inline-six made 335 hp. Buyers could also choose between an eight-speed automatic and a six-speed manual transmission, which added to the car’s enthusiast appeal.
The 2017 BMW 2 Series was not trying to be the roomiest or softest option in its class, but it did offer a strong mix of driving enjoyment and premium features. Standard equipment included a 10-speaker audio system with a 6.5-inch display, dual-zone climate control, and rain-sensing wipers, while available upgrades such as adaptive suspension, variable-ratio steering, and upgraded brakes reinforced its sporty focus.

Is the 2017 BMW 2 Series a good car?
Yes — the 2017 BMW 2 Series earns a 5/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. It was aimed at drivers who wanted a fun driving experience and compact proportions, and its rear-wheel-drive layout helped give it the kind of driving character that set it apart from rivals. Is the 2017 BMW 2 Series reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The 2017 BMW 2 Series was built around a sporty, premium formula rather than maximum practicality, and its standard and available equipment reflect that focus. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that a performance-oriented luxury car can be less forgiving if it has been neglected, so service history matters.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 BMW 2 Series?
This looks like a moderate market where selective buyers can still find value if they compare listings carefully.
- Deal availability: 30.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 50 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.90% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $23,652 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 BMW 2 Series's resale value?
The current average of $23,762 CAD sits slightly below last year's $24,985 CAD.
That softer pricing can be a mixed signal for future resale. If you buy well today, you may have less depreciation risk than someone who paid closer to the prior-year average. On the other hand, a market that has already eased can limit upside if you plan to sell soon.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 BMW 2 Series or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 30.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.90% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: If you want the strongest mix of value, driving character, and owner approval, the 2017 is the year to focus on. If your priority is stretching your budget further, a nearby year may be worth comparing, but the 2017 stands out as the better all-around pick when you can find a well-priced example.
