CarGurus Analysis: 2016 Mazda CX-5
Summary
With 105 currently listed for sale and an average price of $13,375 CAD, 34.3% of 2016 Mazda CX-5 listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Mazda CX-5 4.7 / 5 stars.
Why it stands out
The 2016 Mazda CX-5 stands out as a compact SUV that leans more toward driving enjoyment than most of its rivals. Mazda’s first-generation CX-5 brought a comparatively low-slung, curvy design and sprightlier handling than you’d expect from an SUV of the time, while the 2016 model year added minor cosmetic changes inside and out along with LED headlights and a city braking system for the first time. It was also offered with familiar GX, GS, and GT trim levels, and standard equipment included air conditioning, cruise control, power side mirrors, and 17-inch alloy wheels.
What makes the 2016 CX-5 appealing is the way it combines that sporty character with sensible everyday usability. The available 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine gave the range more pace than the original 2.0-litre unit, and front-wheel drive was standard with all-wheel drive available as an option. Owners also tend to praise its solid handling, good fuel economy, and useful safety features, which fit the CX-5’s reputation for being a well-rounded and good-value choice.
There are a few drawbacks to keep in mind. The first-generation CX-5 has a mixed reliability reputation, with engine and electrical issues noted for 2014 and 2016 cars, and premature brake wear is also something to watch for. Some owners also mention infotainment glitches and the absence of a back hatch cover. Even so, the 2016 Mazda CX-5 remains distinctive for delivering a more engaging, car-like feel than many compact SUVs while still covering the basics well.

I love this car! Good value, it is way better finished than the Honda HR-V I was looking. The car looks amazing, has enough space, good power and doesn’t even consume too much gas

Is the 2016 Mazda CX-5 a good car?
Yes — owners rate it 4.7/5, which points to strong overall satisfaction. The review summary highlights its blend of performance, comfort, and value for money, along with solid handling, good gas mileage, and useful safety features. That fits well if you want a compact SUV that feels more engaging than most rivals while still covering everyday needs. With 31.9% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have a decent chance of finding a competitive offer.
Is the 2016 Mazda CX-5 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.7/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The review summary points to a vehicle that many owners find dependable in day-to-day use, with praise centred on its solid handling, good gas mileage, and overall value. At the same time, the model’s mixed reliability reputation means you should pay close attention to maintenance history and any signs of electrical or brake-related wear before you buy. For used buyers, that means the long-term ownership risk is manageable, but only if you choose carefully and inspect the vehicle thoroughly.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Mazda CX-5?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but should move quickly on the best-priced examples.
- Deal availability: 31.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 257 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.52% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $13,937 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Mazda CX-5's resale value?
The current average of $13,948 CAD sits slightly below last year's $14,921 CAD.
That softer pricing suggests the model has become more accessible for buyers, but it also means future sellers may need to price competitively to stand out. The current market trend points to steady demand rather than a sharp premium, so condition, mileage, and service history will matter a lot when you go to resell. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2016 Mazda CX-5 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 31.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.52% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: The 2016 CX-5 makes sense if you want the sporty, car-like feel of this generation and you find a well-priced example with a clean history. If you’re especially price-sensitive, a nearby model year may be worth comparing, but the 2016 remains a strong pick when condition and deal quality line up.
