Why it stands out
The 2016 Hyundai Tucson stands out as a compact SUV that blends a more refined design with practical everyday usability. Hyundai gave this generation a noticeably more polished look than before, along with a larger body that increased cargo capacity while keeping passenger space about the same. It also marked a step up in cabin quality, with more vehicle-specific interior details and improved materials that helped the Tucson feel less basic than earlier versions.
Under the bonnet, the 2016 Tucson offered a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine with 164 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque, plus an available 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder rated at 175 hp and 195 lb-ft. Front-wheel drive was standard, while all-wheel drive was available on most lower trims and standard on higher trims. The turbocharged version could reach 100 km/h in about eight seconds, which was average for the class, but the dual-clutch transmission could stumble at low speeds and the base engine was noticeably slower to build speed on the highway.
For buyers, the 2016 Tucson’s appeal was its strong mix of equipment and value. Even the base model included heated front seats, a touchscreen, Bluetooth, satellite radio, and a USB port with an iPod/iPhone interface, while higher trims added features such as a power driver’s seat, AWD, and more upscale comfort and convenience items. Its safety record was also a strength, with five-star ratings in several NHTSA tests and a Top Safety Pick+ award from the IIHS. The main drawbacks were the modest performance of the base engine and the transmission’s occasional hesitation, but for shoppers wanting a well-equipped, comfortable compact SUV, the 2016 Tucson had a lot to offer.

I really liked this vehicle when I took it for a test drive. The interior was clean, the original owner's manual was available, and it drove very smoothly. I wasn't able to test it at highway speeds because I was in a School Zone. I definitely would have bought it, but I couldn't justify the need for it. Some lucky person will snatch it up, I'm sure.

Worst car Ive ever owned. 3 out of 4 doors stopped working (couldnt open or close them), leaks oil, transmission overheats when backing up an incline slowly, AC died after 80K km, Im just waiting for the transmission to fail as that is a well know problem and car jerks or doesnt move upon initial acceleration. DO NOT BUY UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. Consumer Reports gives reliability as 1 out of 10 (likely only because you cant give zero)

I think this car is a very good for its price, the interior is so good. Only issue so far, is that the fuel consumption is quite high.

How much does the 2016 Hyundai Tucson cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $12,027 CAD |
| Year-Round Low | $12,003 CAD |
| Year-Round High | $13,639 CAD |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $13,456 CAD |
| Change vs. Last Year | −10.62% |
Prices have softened 10.62% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.
There are 410 listings available, which suggests you should have a reasonable amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2016 Hyundai Tucson a good car?
The 2016 Hyundai Tucson is a solid pick if you want a compact SUV that balances comfort, features, and everyday practicality, and its 3.8/5 user rating reflects that mixed-but-positive reception.
Drivers commonly praise its smooth ride, comfortable interior, and reliability, and many also like features such as cooled seats and the panoramic roof. The Tucson’s roomier body and more mature design make it a good fit if you want a practical small SUV with a more upscale presence, especially for commuting and family use. With 29.8% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2016 Hyundai Tucson reliable?
The 2016 Hyundai Tucson stands out as a more refined and better-rounded compact SUV than the model that came before it.
Owners often describe it as reliable and comfortable, and the user feedback also points to a smooth ride and a generally dependable feel for everyday use. At the same time, some drivers report serious concerns with safety and transmission behaviour, so you should pay close attention to service records and how the vehicle drives on a test route. For used buyers, that means long-term ownership risk is manageable only if the specific example has been well maintained and shows no signs of transmission trouble.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Hyundai Tucson?
This looks like a moderate buyer’s market, so you can be selective without expecting every listing to be a bargain.
- Deal availability: 29.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 410 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.62% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $12,003 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Hyundai Tucson's resale value?
The current average of $12,027 CAD sits slightly below last year's $13,456 CAD.
That decline suggests the Tucson has softened in the used market, which can work in your favour if you're buying now. For a future seller, it means you should not expect strong price appreciation unless the vehicle is especially well equipped, low kilometre, and in excellent condition. If you plan to resell later, buying at the lower end of the current range gives you a better chance of limiting depreciation.
Should I buy a 2016 Hyundai Tucson or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 29.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.62% compared with last year.
The bottom line: The 2016 Tucson is the better choice if you want a more refined, well-equipped compact SUV at a lower used price than newer examples. If your priority is value and you can find a clean, well-documented vehicle, the 2016 makes sense; if you want to shop even more aggressively on price, a nearby older year may be worth comparing as well.
How does the 2016 Hyundai Tucson compare to the 2016 Mazda CX-5?
| Spec | 2016 Hyundai Tucson | 2016 Mazda CX-5 |
|---|---|---|
| Starting MSRP | $22,700 CAD | $21,795 CAD |
| Engine | 2.0L 164 hp I4 | 2.0L 155 hp I4 |
| Horsepower | 164 hp @ 6200 rpm | 155 hp @ 6000 rpm |
| MPG/MPGe (city) | 23 | 26 |
