CarGurus Analysis: 2016 Ford Mustang

Summary
With 21 currently listed for sale and an average price of $16,450 CAD, 23.8% of 2016 Ford Mustang listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Ford Mustang 4.85 / 5 stars.
Why it stands out
The 2016 Ford Mustang stands out because it combines the Mustang’s long-running rear-wheel-drive formula with a broader, more modernised sixth-generation package. This generation brought a sleeker, smoother design, coupe and soft-top convertible body styles, and an independent rear suspension as part of a ground-up redesign. It was also the first Mustang Ford produced and marketed for a global audience, which helped broaden its appeal beyond its traditional image. For shoppers, that means the 2016 model sits in a generation that feels more refined and more usable day to day while still keeping the car’s core performance identity intact.
Under the bonnet, the 2016 Ford Mustang offered a wide spread of engines and transmissions, which is one of its biggest strengths. The EcoBoost turbocharged 2.3-litre inline four-cylinder powered base Mustangs, while other available engines included a 3.7-litre V6, a 5.0-litre Coyote V8, and two versions of a 5.2-litre V8 exclusive to the Shelby GT350 and the GT500. Depending on the engine, buyers could choose from two six-speed manuals, six- and 10-speed automatics, and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. That variety makes the car appealing to a wide range of buyers, from those who want an accessible daily driver to those looking for a more serious performance machine.
There are also a few drawbacks to keep in mind. The sixth-generation Mustang could be affected by oil consumption and potential head gasket failure in EcoBoost models, and the transmission may be prone to slippage. In Canada, prices for this generation can still be relatively high, especially for later-model GT and GT Premium versions, while special editions command a premium. Even so, the 2016 Ford Mustang remains distinctive because it blends heritage, choice, and performance in a package that is still recognisably a Mustang, but more polished than earlier versions.

So beautiful, top up or down its a head- turner. Super comfortable to drive around town or on the highway, all good. Ford did a good job on the infotainment, plug and play to use Google maps. The sport mode really gets it while normal mode helps save gas. Best in class cargo means you can fit your stuff no problem. I have the 6 speed stick, notchy and fun all the time. The 4 cylinder turbo engine Ecoboost means the car is way lighter than the GT which makes this really easy to drive and nimble. The brakes are great. At 34,000 and have no issues, very reliable. I love this car. What a delight. They say things dont make your life better but this car proves otherwise!

The premium is the perfect mix of luxury meets sport. Plenty of options included adds lots of comfort. And this GT is fast with amazing handling and control. My wife can take it to the grocery store without being scared of it and I can drop it in sport mode and tear up the asphalt.

I have a very well equipped Ecoboost Premium. The car rides exceptionally well. The 4 cyl has plenty of power and pulls close to 30 MPG on the highway. The car is a joy to drive and is my 5th Mustang. Having owned some older generations, this is the best one yet. Lots of creature comforts in this model and a nice mix of retro and new.

Is the 2016 Ford Mustang a good car?
Yes — the 2016 Ford Mustang earns a 4.85/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners consistently praise its fun and smooth ride, performance, and handling, while also appreciating its stylish design and the value it offers compared with similar cars. For you, that means it fits especially well if you want a sporty rear-wheel-drive coupe or convertible that still feels usable day to day. With 26.4% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2016 Ford Mustang reliable?
Owners rate it 4.85/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a car that many drivers find dependable and enjoyable to live with over time, especially when it comes to its smooth driving character and overall ownership experience. That said, used buyers should still inspect carefully for model-specific wear and any signs of costly repairs, since long-term ownership risk can vary by engine and maintenance history.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Ford Mustang?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer's market, so you can shop patiently and still find worthwhile options.
- Deal availability: 26.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you a decent chance of finding value.
- Inventory: There are 144 listings available, so you have enough choice to compare trims and conditions.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.10% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $21,219 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Ford Mustang's resale value?
The current average of $23,887 CAD sits slightly below last year's $25,170 CAD.
That softer pricing suggests future sellers may face a more competitive market than they did a year ago. If you buy now, you should expect resale value to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and how well the car is equipped. Stronger examples should hold up better than average ones, especially if they appeal to shoppers looking for a well-kept performance car.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.85/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2016 Ford Mustang or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 26.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.10% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.85/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $23,119 CAD, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $23,887 CAD average.
- It brought a major redesign with stronger technology and broader appeal.
The bottom line:
Choose the 2016 if you want the newer sixth-generation Mustang experience and are willing to pay a bit more for it. If your priority is saving money, the 2015 is the better value path, especially if you find a clean example with the features you want.
