Why it stands out
The 2016 Chevrolet Trax stands out as Chevrolet’s first subcompact crossover, and its appeal comes from the way it blends small-car manoeuvrability with the higher seating position and extra space buyers wanted from an SUV. In its first-generation form, it was designed and developed with GM Korea, and the result was a budget-friendly, compact vehicle that aimed to be practical for everyday use without feeling oversized. For this model year, it was still part of the early run of Trax production, which the guide describes as relatively slow compared with later years and rather sparse on safety features, though those models did earn decent safety scores relative to their contemporaries.
The 2016 Chevrolet Trax was offered with a 1.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, and the guide notes that output was merely adequate. It also came with front-wheel drive, while all-wheel drive was available as an option on the LT and LTZ trim levels. The cabin’s usefulness was a key part of the Trax’s identity: the base model included a folding front passenger seat that allowed owners to carry objects nearly 2.5 metres long, along with a seven-inch infotainment touchscreen, OnStar, and Bluetooth. Higher trims added conveniences such as alloy wheels, air conditioning, cruise control, heated mirrors, a backup camera, a power driver’s seat, and a seven-speaker Bose audio system.
What makes the 2016 Trax especially distinctive is that it sits just before the model’s later updates brought in more modern connectivity and safety equipment. That means it still reflects the Trax’s original value-first formula: compact dimensions, useful packaging, and available all-wheel drive, but with performance and equipment that were modest by later standards. For shoppers who prioritise affordability and easy urban use over outright speed or a long list of features, that combination remains the Trax’s main draw.

Despite the fact that the vehicle was slightly smaller than my last, it fits well between a typical sedan and an SUV. It's roomy enough inside, everything is well within reach, and the feature set is just what I was looking for. Aesthetically the design of the car is very nice to look at. It's easy on the eyes with smooth lines and a high enough profile. I'm not disappointed with my decision at all to purchase this vehicle. Would recommend.

I was recently in an accident. Where I had the Right-of-way, and the person had a flashing red light. I was struck and the airbags were deployed. Both me and my passenger were able to safely walk away from the accident. I wish I could upload pictures. The car is amazing and the Trax will be my choice of vehicle from now on. Also add weight to the back end of the Trax. I live in the northeast and we get snow. Its a little light when it comes to dealing with snow.

I have been driving it for 5 days and the car is comfy and easy to drive. It is a compact SUV but you can go to the mountains without worrying about the road. So far so good. I like all the little details inside the car, such as a back-up camera and cruise.

| Year-Round High | $11,295 CAD |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $11,295 CAD |

Is the 2016 Chevrolet Trax a good car?
Yes — the 2016 Chevrolet Trax earns a 5/5 user rating, and its appeal is rooted in being a city-friendly subcompact crossover that blends sedan-like manoeuvrability and fuel efficiency with a higher seating position and extra cargo flexibility. It was designed as an affordable, practical choice for shoppers who wanted small-SUV utility without moving up to a larger crossover, and its packaging includes useful touches like a folding front passenger seat and a seven-inch infotainment touchscreen.
The market also shows 18.8% of listings as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2016 Chevrolet Trax reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The 2016 Trax’s strengths are more about everyday usefulness and value than standout performance, and its early-year design means it was not especially rich in safety or convenience features compared with later versions. For used buyers, that means long-term ownership risk is less about complexity and more about making sure the specific vehicle has been maintained well and still suits your expectations for features and refinement.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Chevrolet Trax?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile options.
- Deal availability: 18.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 96 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 25.15% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $8,381 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Chevrolet Trax's resale value?
The current average of $8,454 CAD sits slightly below last year's $11,295 CAD.
That price movement suggests the Trax has become more accessible for buyers, but it also means future sellers may need to price competitively to stand out. Because the model is positioned as a practical, budget-conscious small SUV, resale value will likely depend on how well your vehicle presents against other listings in the market. If you keep it clean, well maintained, and reasonably equipped, you should be in a better position when it is time to sell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2016 Chevrolet Trax or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 18.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 25.15% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: The 2016 Trax makes sense if you want a budget-friendly, city-sized crossover and you find one priced well within the current market. If you are especially price-sensitive, keep an eye on listings near the low end of the range and compare them carefully against nearby model years before you commit.
