Why it stands out
The 2016 Acura MDX stands out as a three-row luxury SUV that blends family practicality with a more polished, driver-focused character than many rivals. By this point in the third generation, Acura had already moved the MDX toward a more technology-rich cabin, and the model’s appeal rested on a comfortable ride, a spacious interior, and a strong reputation for quality. Owners also tend to value its effective safety features and overall performance, which help make it feel like a well-rounded family vehicle rather than just a badge-driven luxury crossover.
What makes the 2016 model especially distinctive is the way it combines useful equipment with a relatively efficient V6 powertrain. The third-generation MDX uses a re-engineered 3.5-litre V6 rated at 290 horsepower, and it was paired with a nine-speed automatic by 2016 to improve fuel economy. Natural Resources Canada rated this version at 11.1 litres per 100 kilometres combined with Super-Handling All-Wheel Drive, which is a respectable figure for a three-row luxury SUV. Acura also continued to add more driver-assist equipment during this generation, including adaptive cruise control and automatic emergency braking, while ventilated seats had become more common than they were on earlier versions.
There are trade-offs, though. The infotainment system was still not especially easy to use, and the third row remained tight. Even so, the 2016 Acura MDX is appealing because it offers a lot of standard content, solid efficiency for its class, and the kind of everyday comfort that makes it easy to live with.

Yes a great value and w/ Acura watch this is totally incredible for a smaller suv. Having the Acura 4yr. Warranty w/50K miles. This has the 3.5 Fwd power everywhere and power outlets are all over as well. Leather is beautiful it’s got more buttons it can be overwhelming but it’s greatly appreciated.

I chose this specific trim (Elite model) for comfort and well… the wide screen entertainment system for my younger kids. For a 8 year old car it drives amazingly. I have driven Hondas, Toyotas Fords but this might be the best I have owned.

How much does the 2016 Acura MDX cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $16,401 CAD |
| Year-Round Low | $16,394 CAD |
| Year-Round High | $19,663 CAD |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $19,561 CAD |
| Change vs. Last Year | −16.16% |
Prices have softened 16.16% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.
There are 131 listings available, which gives you a modest amount of choice in the used market.
Is the 2016 Acura MDX a good car?
Yes — 5/5 is a strong user rating for the 2016 Acura MDX, and owners consistently point to the comfortable ride, effective safety features, and overall performance. The spacious interior also comes through as a recurring strength, which fits well if you want a family-friendly three-row SUV that still feels upscale. For shoppers who want a practical luxury SUV with a strong value proposition, the MDX’s mix of comfort and features makes it easy to consider. With 29.8% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still some market opportunity if you shop carefully.
Is the 2016 Acura MDX reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also highlights the MDX as a dependable, trouble-free choice overall, with many drivers describing it as a great value for the money. That said, some owners mention transmission shifting concerns, so you should pay close attention to how the vehicle drives and whether service records show consistent maintenance. For used buyers, the long-term ownership risk looks manageable if you choose a well-kept example and verify that the drivetrain has been cared for properly.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Acura MDX?
This is a moderate, selective buyer's market, so you can be patient and still find a solid example.
- Deal availability: 29.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 131 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 16.16% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $16,394 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Acura MDX's resale value?
The current average of $16,401 CAD sits slightly below last year's $19,561 CAD.
That price movement suggests the market has become more favourable for buyers, but it also means a future seller may need to price competitively to stand out. If you buy at today's lower average, you may have less downside risk than someone who purchased when prices were higher. The MDX's broad appeal as a comfortable, practical three-row luxury SUV should help support demand, especially among shoppers looking for a premium family vehicle.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2016 Acura MDX or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 29.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 16.16% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: The 2016 MDX is a strong choice if you want a comfortable, well-equipped three-row luxury SUV and you value buying into a softer market. If you are especially price-sensitive, you may want to compare nearby years and focus on the best-maintained example rather than the newest badge on the tailgate.
