Why it stands out
The 2015 Ford Explorer stands out as a family-focused midsize SUV that blends space, technology, and a more polished driving feel than earlier Explorers. In the fifth-generation body, it moved away from the old truck-like formula and became a crossover-style vehicle with a front-wheel-drive-based layout and available all-wheel drive. That change helped make it more car-like to drive, while still leaving it with the room and versatility buyers expect from an Explorer. It also brought modern infotainment to the nameplate, including Ford’s SYNC system, and buyers could add comforts such as heated and ventilated front seats and a rear-seat DVD entertainment system.
For shoppers, the 2015 Ford Explorer’s appeal lies in its broad usefulness. It offers seating for up to seven, and many buyers chose a six-passenger layout with second-row captain’s chairs. Safety and convenience equipment were a strong part of the package too, with available features such as BLIS blind spot information system with rear cross traffic alert, forward-collision warning with emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, active parking assist, and rain-sensing wipers. At the same time, it is not without drawbacks: the generation has a mixed reliability record, and fuel economy is a weak point. Even so, its combination of space, available features, and everyday practicality makes it a compelling used SUV for families who want a lot of utility without giving up comfort.

Good vehicle for a growing family. The XLT may not be as flashy as the Limited or as fast as the Sport, but itll get you from A to B. Very comfortable and it has tons of room.

Is the 2015 Ford Explorer a good car?
Generally — the 2015 Ford Explorer earns 4.41/5, which points to strong owner satisfaction for a used family SUV. Drivers commonly praise its comfort, spaciousness, and performance, and many also like its technology and driveability. The Explorer’s family-focused layout and room for up to seven make it especially appealing if you want everyday practicality with a more polished feel. With 20.5% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have some room to shop carefully.
Is the 2015 Ford Explorer reliable?
Owners rate it 4.41/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a vehicle that many people find dependable enough for family use, with repeated praise for its comfort and usefulness over time. At the same time, the broader model reputation suggests you should pay attention to maintenance history and condition, since long-term ownership risk is not zero for used buyers.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2015 Ford Explorer?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient and compare listings carefully.
- Deal availability: 20.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 132 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 14.36% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $12,203 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2015 Ford Explorer's resale value?
The current average of $12,331 CAD sits slightly below last year's $14,400 CAD.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer now but may limit upside if you plan to resell soon. If you buy at the right price and keep the vehicle in strong condition, you may be better positioned than someone who pays closer to the top of the range. The current spread between the low and high end also shows there is still room for value-conscious shoppers to find a better entry point.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.41/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2015 Ford Explorer or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2015 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2015 if:
- 20.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 14.36% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.41/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: The 2015 Ford Explorer makes the most sense if you want a roomy, family-friendly SUV with strong owner approval and you can take advantage of today’s softer pricing. If you’re mainly focused on stretching your budget, this year is worth a close look; if you want the newest possible example, you may want to compare nearby model years and shop for the cleanest, best-priced listing rather than focusing on this year alone.
