Why it stands out
The 2014 Ford Explorer stands out as a midsize SUV that had already moved well beyond its truck-based roots by this point. In the fifth generation, it used Ford’s D4 platform and became a crossover-like vehicle with front-wheel drive behaviour in most cases and all-wheel drive available as a side benefit. That shift helped make it more car-like to drive than earlier Explorers, while still keeping the roomy, family-friendly character that made the nameplate so popular.
For 2014, the Explorer also offered a broad spread of equipment and powertrains. Buyers could get a 290-horsepower 3.5-litre V6, and the model line also included a 2.0-litre EcoBoost turbocharged four-cylinder that improved combined fuel consumption to 10.2 L/100 km. Safety and convenience features were a strong part of the appeal, with available BLIS blind spot information system with rear cross traffic alert, forward-collision warning with emergency braking, automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, active parking assist, and rain-sensing wipers. Ford also refreshed the Explorer’s styling and in-car tech in 2014, which helped keep it current.
That said, the 2014 Ford Explorer was not without compromises. The generation as a whole did not rank at the top of its class for efficiency, reliability, space, or luxury, and the model’s reliability record was only average or below average. Even so, it remained a practical choice for buyers who wanted a well-equipped SUV with strong everyday usability, available all-wheel drive, and enough versatility to serve as a family vehicle.

The Ford Explorer is the best vehicle I have ever owned . I like to buy american also looked at the Lincoln MKX which was noisy in comparison . I believe Lincoln has become an over priced Ford . Go with the Explorer if you are looking for an SUV

After driving the new Ford Explorer sport for the first time about six months ago, it has to be the best SUV on the market. The performance of the 3.5L twin turbo 365 HP engine is second to none. The cab is nicely appointed, very comfortable and outside sound is minimal. The styling is low and lean and with the all black grill the overall appeal is outstanding. At 16MPG city, the gas mileage could be improved a bit, but you have to give up MPG for that kind of HP. This SUV is great to drive as you feel sturdy and solid in it, yet the nimble steering and responsive suspension make you feel in complete control. It will get wherever you want to go as fast as you want to go there, but keeps you in control and can also get you out of any situation needed.

Is the 2014 Ford Explorer a good car?
Yes — the 4.5/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners commonly praise its comfort, space, and performance, while also noting its stylish design and value for money. For you, that makes it a sensible fit if you want a family-friendly midsize SUV with broad everyday usefulness and available all-wheel drive. With 18.8% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2014 Ford Explorer reliable?
Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback points to a vehicle that many people find dependable in day-to-day use, with comfort and performance standing out as recurring strengths. At the same time, some owners mention maintenance costs and concerns on higher-mileage examples, so used buyers should pay close attention to service history and overall condition. For long-term ownership, the main risk is that a neglected example could become more expensive to keep than a well-maintained one.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2014 Ford Explorer?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without feeling rushed.
- Deal availability: 18.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 80 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.14% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $10,022 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2014 Ford Explorer's resale value?
The current average of $11,484 CAD sits slightly below last year's $12,640 CAD.
That decline suggests the market has become a bit softer, which can work against you if you plan to sell soon. On the other hand, it may also make the SUV more approachable for buyers who want value now. If you keep the vehicle in strong condition and maintain it properly, you may be better positioned when it comes time to resell. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2014 Ford Explorer or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2014 if:
- 18.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.14% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: You should lean toward the 2014 if you want a well-equipped, family-friendly midsize SUV and you find one with a clean history at a fair price. If you are especially price-sensitive, it can also make sense to compare nearby years and focus on the best-maintained example rather than the newest badge alone.
