2nd gear not engaging

Asked by perezzoo Jan 15, 2007 at 10:46 PM about the 1995 Ford Explorer 4 Dr XLT 4WD SUV

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Explorer still driven, it just won't engage in 2nd gear. If you let
off the gas it will kick in. Can you maybe tell me if the transmission
needs to be replaced?

Hey perezzoo. I would be very reluctant to send you out to replace the transmission based just on what I know here. Check your transmission fluid level first and if that seems normal take it to a professional to be evaluated. You may very well be lined up for a new transmission but you need to make sure that's what you need before you spend the money. Good luck!

the 2nd band in the trans breaks. It can be replaced without rebuilding the entire transmission. I had it done on my 94 and 95 explorers. I was told it was very common
