Really hard to give a full cost break down, since you never know what's really wrong with an engine until you tear them open. You might have a blown head gasket, you might also have a cracked intake. You can try Repairpal.com for some ballpark figures, you could also call around for quotes from local mechanics. You may also find the cost of a replacement engine makes more sense than $1,500 on a head gasket job for an engine that still needs other work.

If you don't have time for a mechanic you don't have time for the repair. A shop will likely have your car for a full day or two while they do the job.
