i have '98 ford explorer with a 4.0 liter engine. Can i swap the transmission out of a '95 Ford explorer 4.0 liter?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Need to know if my '98 Ford explorer is compatible with a '95 Ford explorer.
They both have the same engines, but they have different computers. My '98
has a OBDII and the '95 has a OBDI.

I would like to change out the transmission in the '95 because it's brand new.

Any info would be greatly appreciated! I don't know if you can change out the
computers or not, or if it's necessary. I don't know if they will hook up the
same way. I'm sure that transmissions will physically bolt up, but i'm worried
about whether or not the difference in computers and how to make this work.

Do you guys ever answer any of the questions that are sent in? 'Cause i'd really need to know this information. I'd hate to install the transmission and it doesn't shift because of the year differences. I know that it will physically bolt up, but it's about the computer differences. If you guys can't answer the question, can you refer me to an different site that can? Thank you for your time!

The 4.0 OHV engine has about six variations of blocks, heads, etc. Your 98 has the last version which operates properly in 97 through 2000. You will definitely have to take the PCM/ OBD II with you and you may run into problems with not having plugins in the 95 required by the the newer system. The 98 only had one transmission available, You'll have to check the part number for the 95 to see if they are the same.
