If tie rods on a '94 Porsche 928 GTS are damaged and need to be replaced, should the steering gear be checked too, and if so, does it need to be removed?

Asked by LA928 Jul 26, 2016 at 10:46 AM about the 1994 Porsche 928 GTS Hatchback

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

While backing out of our garage, the gas pedal stuck and our '94 928, which
has about 45,000 miles on it and in excellent condition, made a semi-circle
and went over a curb backwards, and knocked down part of our metal fence.
Aside from the body and tire damage, both tie rods were damaged (see
photos).

Did you say 1994 with 45,000 miles? Did you purchase your car new and how is it possible to only have 45,000 miles on the car? YES, of course your car needs to be INSPECTED.

No need to remove the rack unit (steering gear) to inspect it, It can be checked for cracks or leaking on the lift.. after the bent tie rod sleeve along with the inner and outer tie rods are removed. Of course have all 4 wheels aligned after. BUT WHY? did the gas pedal stick investigate this thoroughly.

The car was bought new in 1994, and driven about 2,000 miles every year. I am pretty sure the driver hit the gas instead of the brake, and that the gas pedal didn't stick. Thanks for the replies.

2,000 miles per year? Either it sat around for long periods of time or was driven mostly in town? That's an average of less than 6 miles per day! Some people would argue that this 45,000 miles is harder on the car and the engine components than a car driven on the freeway with four times this mileage. Even at 200,000 miles, it would be considered normal mileage for a 1994 vehicle.

Of course, whatever the case, it's worth fixing to preserve your investment.
