2021 Subaru Forester Whines After Shutoff

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Here is a recording of the sound:

I bought this car a month ago. It has 480 miles
on it. It has an auto shut off feature when I
come to long stops. Since I got the car, it will
occasionally make this noise when I am
stopped at a stoplight and the car auto shuts
off, or when I completely turn the engine off
and exit the vehicle. There are no alert lights
on, and it happens during both short and long
trips.

I am going on a road trip soon so I took it to
the Subaru dealership today to look into the
noise. The service manager had no idea what
I was talking about, and he said they drove it
3 miles and were not able to replicate the
noise. He said a recording would be helpful if I
come in again, so I decided to record when I
got home just in case, and, with much
annoyance, I was able to capture the noise on
the first try.

The service manager said, even though he
doesn’t know what it is, I should be fine on my
road trip.

I only know the bare basics about cars. I
would really appreciate some insight, and to
know whether or not I should go back to the
dealership.

You have a warranty and towing coverage as part of your warranty. I would probably go ahead and take your trip.

I have a 2021 Forester with less than 17K miles. Started making high pitched tonal sound when I turned engine off. It occurred occasionally. Took to dealer with recording of the noise. They diagnosed AC condenser leaking freon and noise due to low freon. Parts on order and covered under warranty.
