Probably a servo went out or getting weak. Mine did the same thing but when I turned off the key and drove it later it would not start blinking again for a while. My tranny guy told me to drive it to his shop when it started blinking and not turn off the motor. He had to replace a servo.

I had to change the blown valve body gasket on my 2001Ford Explorer XLS. Cheap fix, detailed work, worth the time. No problems since. The Ford Explorer Forum will walk you through it. Good Luck.

The transmission fluid was pretty dark. It didn’t take much to check out the gasket (especially since I’ve never worked on a vehicle before) I followed the instructions with all the helpful pictures and I couldn’t be happier. Good luck to you! I hope it is just the gasket! ($15-$20)
