damage to engine + by driving in low gear at fast speed for 20 minutes

Asked by jdatcv Dec 09, 2015 at 07:38 PM about the 2002 Nissan Maxima SE

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Maxima 02, drove it (by mistake) at 55-60 mph for about 20 minutes. Car now shakes a bit sometimes, and idles roughly after having been driven. I've changed the oil.
What kind of damage did I do? And how do I check it out?

Does your car have a tachometer? If so, did you notice how fast the engine was running? I am not asking to criticize, but more to understand just that, what rpm for 20 minutes?

If you red lined it or over revved for 20 miles it could be serious. I would do a compression test and maybe use a bore scope to take a look inside the piston bores. How is your oil pressure?
