Question type: Maintenance & Repair

we need a engine swap for a 1997 Ford Ranger 2 Wheel drive extended cabin.
what should I look for when looking for a replacement engine?
what model engine fits?
what are they specs for an eligible replacement engine?
we are looking for one in a junk yard.

Thanks so much

I would stick to an OBD2 engine the same as what you have now. If you try to swap a different engine in you will need the wiring and computer as well as the exhaust system and all the smog stuff,

OBD2 started in 96 and you can verify it by looking for the OBD2 port under the steering wheel.

Thanks, is it the same for a 1998 ranger? How many years did they use the OBD2 for?

mmins 4bt in very easily, a 1959-1995 (years might be off) chevy 350. obivisly any of the for engines f1, if your looking for any engine your going to need the wiring harness and ecu. as in smog crap it can be deleted pretty easy. It all depends on what you want really. you can put a cuor that year. the newwer ford 5.0l fits (woulldnt suggest engines are on back order) easist way find a 2.3l(junk) 3.8 etc and install. or buy a doner car with the 4bt or other engines, pull all nessary parts and then resell chasis and cab to get some money back. Really that is the cheapest way because you can find donar vehciles for $500 with the motor ecu harness everything.
