My engine filter was suggested to be change during a routine maintenance on my 06 Nissan Maxima a while back and now my check engine soon light came on, could the unchanged filter be the cause?

not unless it is very bad and restricting air flow to the intake causing a maf sensor code

air filters need replacing every 30K, sooner if you drive in very dusty places or they get chewed by mice
