I had the exact same problem with my 1998 explorer over a decade ago. Brought it to my transmission guy with the light still on. Checked it out with a computer, told me to have a seat it would be about half an hour. It was a solenoid. Obviously something on the outside as he sent a runner to get the part and it was fixed within ten minutes after he returned.

Check fuse #23 under the hood. Or locate your "transmission fuse" there. I would start with that first.
