Retrieving codes without tool

Is it possible to pull codes without buying a tool for
check engine light on 1997 ford expedition xlt v8
suv

I know that's an old answer but it's wrong. You can hold down the trip reset button while the engine is off, turn the key to the start position (do not crank), and when the odometer says 'test', let go. Then press and let go to go through the various tests and then it will say the codes if they exist. They start with 'P'. Tested on my 1999 Ford expedition.

I had a couple of 90s GM cars, a LeSabre and a Bonneville, on which you could read the codes by jumpering the OBD connector and turning on the ignition. The CEL would flash out the code(s). You'll have to google the specifics, but it works.
