Does my piston need to be replaced?

Asked by Tanner May 12, 2018 at 02:50 PM about the 2005 Mitsubishi Outlander LS AWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My engine has been knocking for some time now, I finally figured out the head
gasket had blown between to cylinders. Unfortunately when I took the cylinder
head off, I noticed damage to the piston, though there was no debris present.
Judging from this picture, does the piston need to be replaced?

Replacing just one piston would be a waste of money. Your engine needs a rebuild.

I agree. That's what I ended up doing and it worked. A good month's worth of work though!
