Should I really have to pay a diagnostic fee during inspection for an issue that the dealer supposedly fixed but couldn't clear(light)?

Asked by Calvin Jul 02, 2015 at 03:21 PM about the 2007 Mitsubishi Outlander LS

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I'm at a mitsubishi dealership to get my 07
outlander inspected. I spent over 10,000
dollars about two years ago getting this car
fixed at this location after an accident and
after it was all done, They revealed to me
that they couldn't get the abs and service
engine lights to go off.....I tried to be
understanding and was just happy to have
my wheels again. The year after I went back
to get an inspection done and brought to
their attention the trouble they had getting
the engine lights off and they waived the
110.00 diagnostic fee because the. "service
engine soon" Light was triggered by the abs
light (yes they replaced the sensor
originally). Now they are charging despite
rather or not the check engine light is being
caused by the abs system. I'm I wrong to
think that if they can't fix the problem they
shouldn't be charging a diagnostic fee?

Ethically, morally, Customer service, and much more say no, you should not have to pay them for a diagnostic. Legally, they can (and do) charge But if you have any work done that diagnostic fee should come off the top of bill

Thanks. I ended up going to auto zone where I was going to borrow tools to disconnect my battery in attempt to reset the code. The guy said he could just reset it with his device which he did. I've been driving for over 50 miles and my dash has never been so silent. Took it to get inspected and passed. I think the dealer may have just been screwing with me from the beginning (as easy as that is to believe). They sent me home after 3 hours of waiting and wanted me to come back in a week and leave it there -No way. Thanks for your response Ford nut, that made total sense to me.
