Low idle speed for first two minutes after start 2002 Lincoln Continental

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

After cold or warm start I have to have the air conditioning off for about 2 minutes to keep car from stalling with low idle speed.  This started a few weeks ago.  Car has 173K miles on it and runs fine otherwise.  What is problem?

Would check for vacuum leaks and give the throttle body a cleaning could be gummed up. Depending on what the idle is after the car is warmed up such as still being low then it might point to a failing compressor. putting excessive load on the engine. My other idea is that you should check your charging system such as alternator output and do a load test on the battery. Good Luck!

I agree with Brian’s other idea. It is most likely that you have a battery and or alternator that requires replacing. The ac is one of the biggest drains on your vehicles electrical system and A properly functioning battery and alternator is needed to make sure things run smoothly. It sounds like you have perhaps just enough battery to turn the vehicle over and the alternator then goes to work charging which is why after a bit of time you can run ac and what not just fine, however the battery is likely not holding all of its charge when the car is stationary which is why your encountering this problem each and every time you start it. So I’d start with your battery. And be quick about it because if that’s all correct then it may not be long before the battery falls below the required amount to even start the car leaving you stranded. Hope that helps. Good luck.
