2017 Subaru Impreza manual

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My car started burning oil at 4600. I just had my oil
consumption test done. The dealer said that since,
at 1200 miles, my car only burned 5oz of oil,  that it
was considered "normal" and the test was
complete.  My argument is that the oil consumption
test should be checked at different mileage
throughout the test, up to at least 5000 miles, not
just a 1200 miles. Has anyone else had the oil
consumption test done and how did they perform
it?

No more than 1/3 quart (10.6 oz) in 1,200 miles is the standard and your car uses very little oil. You are lucky and have nothing to complain about. Some oil usage is normal, yours is quite good.

This is how the test is done. They change your oil (free to you). You drive the car and take it back after 1,200 miles, they check the oil level and calculate the rate your engine used oil based on the standard of 1 quart in 3,600 miles. If the oil consumption is less than that your engine passes.
