96 Jeep Cherokee Starting Procedure

Question type: General

I have a 96 Jeep Cherokee 6 cylinder automatic. I've heard that I need to step
on the brake pedal before starting the car. I have been having trouble unlocking
the ignition, but notice that if I turn it slightly to the left, it sometimes releases it
so it turns the car on.  I have not been able to find any videoes or information
on this issue. Can you tell me?

thanks for your input. My car is parked on the flat driveway next to my home. I have all new parts related to the starter. I was also told to try a newer key (the spare) as my regular key may have worn down groves and the tumblers aren't connecting (or something like that). I'm scared to drive now. :(
