2002 jeep liberty high rpms

My 2002 jeep liberty 3.7, will at times jump in rpms and loose speed. Any suggestions don't
think it's the tranny, for it shift very smooth and quietly.

If the check engine light is on, have the vehicle scanned for trouble codes. I suspect the Throttle Positioning Sensor or a broke wire at the plugin.
