2017 Santa Fe Limited Towing Capacity

Asked by GuruXTJD5 Oct 14, 2018 at 03:43 PM about the 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Limited FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

We purchased a 2017Santa Fe Limited to tow a 17' trailer with a dry weight of 2,800 lbs.  Dealer assured us that the vehicle had a towing capacity of 5,000 lbs & since the vehicle had a "Trailer Prep" all we needed to add was a hitch which they installed & 7pin connector for electric. We also had a brake controller installed.  Our problem is that 1 year later after driving & towing trailer,  vehicle developed a thumping noise when turning & going across a bump. Dealer said the rear springs were bad from towing & they replaced with heavy duty springs & struts because apparently the vehicle was not properly equipped from factory. Vehicle still makes thumping noise that dealer says is from vehicle sitting too low & putting pressure on bolts due to bad springs.  Dealer also tried to install new air springs (bags) to raise vehicle & they blew up. This has been going on for 2 1/2 months & the dealer just want to keep trying to replace springs & not fixing problem.  Any suggestions or solutions would be greatly appreciated.

I also suggest that you weigh the trailer loaded to see what it really weighs.

One more thing. You may also need a weight distributing hitch.

We towed a 3500 lb trailer from Wisconsin to Florida and back; 4500 miles by the time we were done. We have a weight distribution hitch. The car (rated for 5000 lbs) pulled well, but I question the adequacy of the suspension. I felt as though I was sitting on a bowl of jello. We returned from our trip, and within a week had traded for an f150.

You need a weight stabilizing hitch and arms. they distribute the weight and it will not sag.

Try a couple of donuts in each spring. They are available from autozone et al. Use with a WDH.
