1983 chevy k10 starting issue

Asked by Pointer8169 Feb 28, 2017 at 08:20 PM about the 1983 Chevrolet C/K 10 Scottsdale LB 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 1983 Scottsdale 305 4wd p/u. One day out
of the blue it became "hard to start". Not a motor
issue but a ignition issue. Basically to start it  I turn
the key forward and then give a little extra turn or
forced turn into it and boom it'll start. So it's a
connection issue I'm guessing? It does have a tilt
wheel and i heard that it is a common problem. It's
going out fast and might only have a couple starts
left... anyone know what part I need to fix this?
Thanks,
Colton

Well the thing is that it does start. Not to say there isn't a broken wire in the steering column, but it could be the rod that runs down to the ignition switch. It just may need to be bent back a little bit. The rod gets out of shape threw time and use.

You may need to replace the lock cylinder on the steering column . Probably turn key to run , depress a pin from underneath and the lock will pull out , then take careful note of the position of the rack or rod in the column , A locksmith might have a better price than the dealer for a lock set ,Your experience may differ .Scrap yards will only sell the whole unit .
