Perhaps the linkage is way out of adjustment. Did you have work done on the transmission recently?

Agreed, linkage. Way out of whack. Does it roll in Park? It's a matter of getting under there, jack up and support properly, Do NOT GET UNDER CAR ON A TIRE JACK, but the effort of raising it will more than make up for the trying to squeeze yourself under the car, you will be able to see what is going on much better. Get a helper to shift through gears while you watch linkage
