02 GC check engine and check gauges lights on

Asked by Headusher Apr 07, 2020 at 03:23 PM about the 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland 4WD

Question type: General

02 Jeep GC. Check engine light came on...ran fine.  Parked, then went to
start  jeep again and the check gauges light came on and engine wouldn't
start. Checked all ground points and re-tightened.  Found a gound braided
wire on rear of enginee not connected.  Connected it to chassis and both
lights went out.  Engine runs fine. Was this the fix?

That ground could turn on the CEL and if not addressed, you get the Check Gauges light to get your attention. That worked.

Now the check engine is coming on and off randomly. The code indicates a faulty CAM sensor that was replaced a few months ago because of the same issue. Mechanic says could be a problem with the computer and said to drive until it quits otherwise I could be rplacing sensors randomly and spend a lot of money with no resolution. Not sure where to go from here. Car drives fine.

He's basing his response due to the fact that we can shut off the CEL by disconnecting the battery. The light come back on after driving a few days. He says this indicates to him a computer malfunction.

Well, it does indicate a malfunction. could be that the CEL is on now due to something else. go too a car parts store and have codes read, probably free, and see if they match what you got earlier.
