The trans is hydraulic,if your engine has over heated you have over heated the trans fluid.When this happens the "O"rings that seal the drums begin to crack and lose pressure.Causing the trans to slip.{engine speeds up car doesn't}. If it is not shifting into gear without giving it gas the valves are sticking.In short have a shop check it for you.
