what are the signs that a 1997 honda accord clutch disks is worn?

on the start up @ 1st and 2nd gear, there is a feeling of motor vibration and when the accelerator is press there is gap of seconds before the car moves. but from gear 3,4,and 5 the car runs very smooth. the mechanic advises that the clutch disks is worn and need to be replace. Is it really the cause?
