Loud thumping coming from rear passenger side tire area!

I have a 2000 Ford Escort and after going over railroad tracks there was a loud thumping
noise followed by the sound of a lot of debris ( possibly rust) breaking away and now it
thumps loudly whenever I go over even the smallest of bumps. It steers fine and there is
no sway to it when I'm driving, just the thumping sound. The noise is coming from the
back passenger tire side.
