What could be the problem?

you could start by checking the level in park, engine hot....check for the level between the two hash marks with the engine running...it should not smell burnt or be anything other than cherry red~

You might check the oil too. We had a 2001 Accord 4 cylinder that acted like it had a transmission problem. The oil pressure sensor failed. The oil pressure was so low, that the engine was very sluggish.
