Ford Ranger Randomly not start and/or die

Asked by Nicholas Jan 31, 2019 at 09:17 AM about the 2005 Ford Ranger XLT SuperCab

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I own a Ford Ranger 2005 XLT 3.0 liter V6 that has an extremely odd and mysterious issue. I have had it into two shops on separate occasions for about 2-3
weeks at a time and no one can figure it out.

There are two issues now occurring with the truck. First off from time to time my truck will crank but not start this issue has happened about 20-25 times or so
over the last year and a half. The second issue is the truck will suddenly die on me after driving and then it will not start up for a few hours or so. This is a
new issue that happened to me 3 times in the last 4 days I had my truck before I towed it into the shop and that is where it is as we speak. When this new
issue started I assumed the fuel pump blew so I got that replaced and then the minute I pulled it out of the shop it died….

The first issue happens which seems to be in spurts. Previously to the last month I haven’t had it not start in 7 months (since May) then it started happening a
lot more frequently (in December). Back in May I took out the fuel pump relay checked it and then added dielectric grease to the relay and the issue went
away until December. So I thought I found the fix with that until December the truck started to not start once again. I would wiggle the relay and it still wouldn’t
start till I waited a few days. Then a few weeks after it started dying on me while driving which is a new issue. That happened to me about 4 times then I
brought it in to the shop and they haven’t got it to die or not start yet.

Try taking off the battery terminals for a couple of minutes. This will reset the BCM (Body Control Module) and it should start up. If this works you have a bad BCM. Check and see if the AC condensation is draining on it and corroding the control module. (Know Ford design flaw)
