How much should it cost to repair a Mercedes 1983 380sl left gasket leak?

Asked by Sandy May 02, 2018 at 12:40 AM about the 1983 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class 380SL

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have received to 2 quotes to repair the gasket leak. One for $3000 and the
other for $12k! Although it is a daily driver, I only drive approx. 2000 miles a
year. My car only has 78k miles on original engine. Everything else passes 41
point check. What is needed for this type of repair to cause such a huge price
difference? (Other than the mechanic just wanting to replace everything since
it's open?? And yes, she has a dual chain.

Here are 2 photos provided by the mechanic. First phone shows that previous owner put a sealant over the leak.

Mechanic said it is the left rear head gasket. Ironically, the $12k quote does NOT include the valve cover gasket.
