Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Have a pristine 2016 HR-V and of recent the keyless ignition fob warning light has popped up on the dash.  I replaced the batteries on both fobs and all was well for a few weeks.  The warning light is coming on again.  Any fixes?

Same issue with 2017. Dealer said can’t find problem. Would “cost thousands” to replace computer

Same issue with 2016. Had it diagnosed and it is the Ignition Start Stop switch. Dealer replaced battery in FOB but it did not fix the problem. They failed to do diagnostic on the car for some reason. Had a friend in the auto repair business diagnose it and it showed the Ignition Start Stop switch ( button) having a fault. Will be making appointment to have this fixed as soon as I can get someone at the dealer to answer the phone ( long story).

Have a 2016 out of warranty with the same problem! Any long term problems from ignoring it?

Replaced the 'start' button the dash ($100.00 and I had to make them 'eat' the diagnostic fee because they said it was a bad fob battery which didn't fix it) . Problem solved, defective start switch. Waiting to pick up our 2019 CRV.

Same problem, but my car would not start 3 - 4 presses... replacing the start/stop button, won't buy Honda again. Just under 3 years old but 4K miles over warranty.

Recently I’ve been taking the fob out of the key so that I could put it in my pocket for when I go running. Do any of you leave the fob and the actual key out of each other for more than 30 mins at a time? I think that may have something to do with it and am trying to piece it together. I also remove the key from the fob on a regular basis (for hours)when I’m on the water. How might it be related? 2016 HRV

I also have the same problem, same year 2016. It now takes me 6 to 16 times pressing the start-stop button before the vehicle will start or stop. What is worse the dealership tells me the replacement part is backordered until the end of February 2020. I'm not very happy.

At Honda Sutton City with same problems. Said my fob & car battery needs replacement. Still under warranty. Had to dive in as they refuse to answer phone!

$40 part online and less than an hour to replace. The only reason it took that long is I was being extra careful not to damage the plastic clips holding the trim. The warning light is off and the car is on!

Same here! Seems ok first thing in the morning when cold. Throughout the day, sometimes works, sometimes not!

My wife is driving 2017 HR-V having the same problem. Replaced batteries in the key fob. Lasted for couple weeks and then came back again. One time I accidentally left the door light on overnight and after that it again turned off for some time but now it’s back on. Some other recommendations here is to replace start button. I ordered one and replaced it, but that light still isn’t going away. The doors open with no problems, the car starts fine, but that key indicator is not going away. Don’t know what else to do. Anyway to turn it off or reset it?

Well for the people that were waiting for a recall or for it to not start at all and needed to be towed the long term affects are after a year and a half of this are sitting in your car for long periods of time pushing the button repeatedly and your break peddle tightens up solid from pressing on it so long. You’ll find yourself doing rituals like waving the fob in the air and rubbing it on the push button, adjusting your shifter to make sure it’s in park or to see if that helps it start, wiggling your steering wheel because you never know, locking and unlocking your car from inside it to make sure the fob is still responsive, getting out of your car locking it then counting down in your head a number you’ve deemed appropriate so other people don’t think you’re crazy, then unlocking it and start the whole process over again and if you’re lucky to get it started, you know in the back of your mind you’re eventually going to have to get this thing shut off because the push button bows for no one and will shut off when the push button wants to shut off. So if you got the patience to do that I’ll keep you in my prayers. I can’t go through another summer hoping it starts so I can roll down my window to get fresh air and not die in a hot car lol

Redsister Okay I have a 2016 Honda HRV and my Smart Entry System light started coming on last week. I did change the batteries in both key fobs and still the light comes on. Going to call the place I purchased the car and see if they can have a look at it. I don’t need to get stranded somewhere.

UPDATE: I bought a new starter button for $20. My mechanic installed it for no charge, only took a couple minutes. It’s working fine now! Will update again if I have any problems.

So as promised I’m here to give an update. Like many of you, it was just the push button that was bad. Of course the Honda service department acted like this was the first time they ever heard of it and wanted me to do their $113 diagnostic test. Even though I only wanted the button replaced. Ended up paying 341.40 for labor and parts. So if you know someone that can change the $20 button I’d start there. The jokes on the dealer though, I’ve got 128,500 miles on my hrv and it’s paid off and I’ll need a new car soon. I asked my Honda sales Rep to tell his boss to make Honda aware of this and suggest a recall because it’s a well known issue since 17 or I won’t buy any more vehicles every 5 years from him anymore.

I have a 2015 HRV and having the same problem? I’ve just had it serviced and the mechanic said he re set the system so it shouldn’t come back on but it just did a day later.Where do you buy the starting button from? I’m never buying a Honda EVER AGAIN !

I think Honda has gone to shit.... miss the good old days of my 99 civic si.... have had nothing but problems with the HRV and all of them in my opinion should be recall issues. Right off the bat the car battery corroded and the battery acid are away the clips in under a year. Have replaced the car battery 3 times in under 5 years. The tail light filled with water, and the cherry on top is the key fop light. No wonder their warranty is kept at such low mileage. Thank you everyone who shared the fix is the button, time to order and take it and change it with a real mechanic like my dad who can diagnose a car when explaining the issue. These dealers charge an arm and a leg and go down a list of change 1 if not change 2 and blah blah. Shame where it’s better to lease and throw the garbage cars back at the dearships

My friends 2016 HRV had a problem with the start switch just recently. She hit it multiple times to get it to turn on or off. What happens is over time the more we push the button the more dust has the potential to get pushed in and get behind the button. It messes with the contact plate. If you suspect you have this problem a great way to test it is to see if using a can of air helps push the dust away. Hold the can of air against the edges of the button and force it through the sides. This worked for my friend, suddenly the car responded better to turning it on and off. Unfortunately this doesn't remove the dust so much as it pushes it around. So your best bet is to either replace the button which I found on eBay for only 20 dollars and it worked, or remove it and if you have the technical know how take the button itself apart enough to clean it with special electronic cleaning spray. The problem doesn't always have to be expensive.

2016 HR-V replaced the key batteries and the light is still on in mine too. Luckily I haven’t had any actual issues starting the car yet, it’s just the annoying light.

Is there anyone who is NOT having issues with the Start button but the key fob light is still ON? If so, does your door lock button work on the outside, when you are leaving the car? Does this door button work intermittently? Does the fob light on the dash come on intermittently? We're just trying to determine where the fault is.

Sounds like a known problem with the HRV for a very long time now. Back when Honda was a more stand-up company they would have done a voluntary recall to keep existing customers happy. Now they only take responsibility when an outside source intervenes and forces them to do so or if the flaw is so dangerous that it risks massive law suites. Times have changed and obviously now their highest priority is new sales without consideration for existing customers.

Honda knows about this problem and they will fix it for free. But just to make sure you know what you're talking about call hondas warranty line and then tell them that what you're car is doing and you heard that they are fixing it. And they can explain everything to you, then write down all the info they give you then call a honda dealer and give them all that info and they are supposed to fix it for free.

Just got a Product Advisory on this, bring it into a dealership if the light is on and they'll fix it. My dealer was going to charge me 500 to replace the start button, very glad I didn't do it at the time, even though I would have been reimbursed for it now.

Hey Guys, I had to borrow my wife's car this evening and found this same issue. In my research I found this: If you have a push button start, get in the car, (without your foot on the break to start it) press the start button twice so that the indicator lights show. Within 5 seconds hold the lock button on your key fob for a few seconds, then release it. You might hear a light click. turn the car off.Jul 5, 2018 Honda CR-V Questions - Low Battery Key blinking after ... https://www.cargurus.com › Discussion-t56914_ds920419 I tried it and it cleared the light. I restarted several times, no light. Worth a try, good luck! ps. I pushed the lock button quickly when the lights came on, and make sure you push the starter button again to turn the system off before you do your start.

After replacing the battery, I did the reset like Guru9TMS5T suggested. It didn't work the first time, but I made sure the driver's door was closed before I did the reset and as soon as I hit the lock button on the fob, the key light went off.

Remove the stop/start switch and spray wd40 on the connector pins. Wipe off excess and replace. Took 5 minutes. Worked for me. Search youtube for the video.

Followed the advice above and removed the switch from the dash (takes about 1 min.), CAREFULLY disassemble the back of the switch (3 tiny locking tabs). Gently remove the small plate with all the electronics on it and clean the 2 brass contactors. The ones on the printed circuit board need very little and gentle cleaning. Clean the 2 brass "buttons" on the back of the switch body - this is where I saw multiple deposits - and carefully reassemble. Whole process took about 10 min. and no more light on the dash. Good luck.

Before dealer / disconnect battery / negative first positive second / wait 10 minutes / reconnect positive first negative second. Things come on line sequentially / if not you get misreads. The problem I had. Wouldn't start and act dead /Then I could start if parking brake was on. Also would not shut off. Mike Flynn
