2015 chevy 1500 bed compared to a 2500 or 3500.

Asked by GuruDLWCH Aug 26, 2017 at 09:28 AM about the 2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ Z71 Crew Cab 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

One of the guys at my work was pulling a trailer
with his 2015 1500 chevy and he didn't have it
loaded correctly. Then he found out the hard way
the breaks weren't working on the trailer.  On a
downhill, he ended up jacknifing and spinning on
the highway.  The truck was totaled by the
insurance company,  but I'm thinking about buying
it.  Would a bed off a 2500 or 3500 be the same?  It
is a crew cab short bed.  I just drove past a place
yesterday that installs utility beds and they have
rows of take off beds.  I doubt any of them are
1500s though.
Please let me know if you have any way of knowing
for sure.
Also the rear axle snapped off right at the wheel.
What all rears (years) would be interchangeable?
I'm kind of in a hurry because I didn't know the
accident happened until I got back in town last
week.  Now they have the title and want to settle
with the insurance company.
Thanks for any and all help.

Did you have it checked for frame damage? Insurance wouldn't have totaled it for just a broken rear axle or dents in the bed. I would absolutely check those shackle mounting points, something may have given on that frame when it jackknifed. I don't believe the 2500/3500 came with the "extra short" beds (the 5.5' bed), they only came with the "short" (6.5) and "long" (8') beds. Otherwise the mounting points are the same.
