Car starts, idles, but will not rev under any load.

Asked by kjhansen Aug 07, 2014 at 03:52 PM about the 2001 Ford Escape XLT FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

It will rev in Park or Neutral, but put it in gear and push down on the gas pedal and it will stutter and stall and will not move.  Fuel pressure is good (65 psi at all rpm), exhaust is clear (i.e., no blockages).  Fuel quality is unknown, but it was running good, then started doing this and died--and not right after filling up with gas.  So... electrical or related to electrical?  If it was a car with a distributor and points, I'd say the distributor wasn't advancing.

Do you hear any hissing sounds under the hood while the engine is running? If you do then you need to track it down and replace any busted vacuum lines or connectors. Next you may want to disconnect the battery and clean out the throttle body with some carb cleaner and a rag. Once it is all cleaned out reassemble and reconnect your battery then crank the truck to see if the issue occurs again. If the issue persists then you may need to run a diagnostic to see if a sensor is faulty or congested.
