HANKOOK Tires Optimo H-426

Asked by Imani22 Jul 25, 2017 at 03:52 PM about the 2015 Hyundai Elantra SE Sedan FWD

Question type: General

ANYONE had problems with these tires exploding?

Trip from Miami-St. Petersburg, Fla July 18,2017
July 18, 2015 returning from a 350 mile trip to Miami from St. Petersburg, Fla. On I-75N, experienced a harrowing driver side rear TIRE EXPLOSION IN ALLIGATOR ALLEY about 11:30am. Hyundai Elantra has NO spare tire on a leased car. Tires are Hankook Omnipro H-426. Multiple complaints filed about these particular tires after researching. Mileage is less than 10K miles and car is only 2 yrs. old and was leased brand new.
Have “Hyundai Roadside Assistance that only tows to nearest dealership”, per CSR after call to report, requiring a trip back 30 miles. After explaining ordeal, tire explosion, rear bumper torn off, back light damage from tire being completely ripped apart and major backside damage from said incident, Davie Florida Hyundai dealership did change and replace tire that I had to purchase.
They assured us that car was safe to drive. Receipt showed multi-point inspection provided as well as wheel balance and alignment. Back on road at approx. 3:30pm, I-75N almost to same spot, (Alligator Alley) second tire explodes on driver side front making car inoperable; waited for 2nd tow(8pm) all the way home, arrived about 12 midnight. I am currently terrified of driving with other two tires on passenger side. Waiting to hear from Hyundai Customer Care about resolution, reimbursement, compensation? exchanging other tires.

I do not think Hyundai is on the hook for this one. Hankook might be if you can prove a faulty tire. Clearly you need to replace all the tires with a quality brand such as Goodyear, Michelin etc.

ALL: I suggest you get new tires ASAP. I replaced all four tires and recently turned in my Hyundai for a 2019. My dealership is no longer using those tires on their newer cars. They went to Goodyear and finally put spares back in the trunk.
