Click the button "on" and the green light means it is in night time dimming mode of cars that tailgate with high beams on. When you put it in reverse, the mirror brightens up so you can see better backing up, especially in the dark.

The green light does not turn on when I push it in so is it broken? And how can I fix it

I believe it only comes on at night when headlamps are set to "auto" or when headlights manually turned on.

Mine was off too in a 2008. I reached up and wiggled the wire on the back of the mirror and it came on. Try that.
